‘Nothing works as well against shame as the sentence: Me too.’

Group therapy

Group therapy is a valuable and scientifically proven effective form of psychotherapy in which you can recover together with other participants. In this therapeutic community, you have the opportunity to share your experiences, learn from each other and support each other. The exchange with like-minded people can help you to feel understood and accepted and at the same time discover new perspectives and solutions.

The therapy group should be a place where you feel safe to share your feelings and experiences and where they are received favourably, respected and not judged.

Group therapy is particularly suitable for people who want to benefit from interacting with others who are going through similar challenges. Whether you are dealing with anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues or other mental health problems, group therapy provides a supportive and motivating environment to make progress together.
From a scientific perspective, group therapy has been shown to be extremely effective and beneficial. Here are some of the factors that characterise group psychotherapy:

Group therapy offers a unique opportunity for social support and connection. Participants can encourage, support and understand each other, which helps to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness and strengthen the desire for change.

In group therapy, participants often realise that their experiences and feelings are not unique or abnormal. By sharing stories and challenges, they learn that they are not alone. This can help to reduce feelings of shame and stigmatisation and boost self-esteem. ‘Nothing works as well against shame as the sentence: Me too.

Groups are made up of people with different backgrounds, experiences and lifestyles. This diversity of perspectives can enrich the group discussions and enable participants to discover new points of view and approaches to solutions. By sharing ideas and experiences, participants can learn from each other and deepen their understanding of themselves and others.

In a group, participants can share positive behavioural changes with each other and encourage each other to continue them. The support and feedback from the group can help to maintain commitment to the therapy process and facilitate the implementation of new skills and strategies in everyday life.

Group dynamics can be a powerful therapeutic force. Through interaction with other group members, unconscious interpersonal patterns and dynamics can be uncovered and worked on. This enables participants to improve their relationship skills and explore new ways of interacting and communicating.

Even though group therapy is characterised by the active participation of all participants and benefits from this, you can also sit back and observe the therapeutic process of your fellow patients and be inspired and learn from it without always having to be the focus yourself.

Even if you are at a point in your life where you are not at all happy with yourself or your life, in a group you always have the opportunity to support the other participants, motivate them, give advice, talk about your own experiences and comfort them. It does us good to help others and it strengthens our self-esteem.

Overall, scientific research provides clear evidence that group therapy is an effective and valuable form of treatment for a variety of mental health problems and is not inferior to treatment in an individual setting.

Group
Offers

These groups provide a supportive framework for individuals facing various (and similar) mental health challenges, including anxiety, mood disorders, self-esteem issues, relationship problems, burnout, and social anxiety.

These groups provide a trusting and empowering space for women seeking support on their journey toward mental health and personal growth. For some women, it is easier to open up and confide in a group exclusively for women.

In our sessions, you will have the opportunity to share experiences with like-minded individuals in a safe space and learn from their insights. You will be encouraged to face your fears, try out new behaviors, and celebrate your successes!

This group is for all patients with different psychological challenges who prefer to do therapy in English over German because German is not their first language. Our English-speaking psychotherapy group provides a welcoming environment for individuals facing a range of psychological issues while living away from their home countries.

Procedure and start of group therapy

If you are interested in participating in group therapy, please send me an e-mail to: mail(at)psychotherapie-ploch.de

Please briefly state your request, your telephone number and, if you like, your age.

After receiving your e-mail, I will call you for a short preliminary discussion. This will give you the opportunity to ask your questions and receive initial information about the process and content of the group therapy. At the same time, we will use this conversation to get a first impression of your therapy needs and to see whether one of my therapy groups might be suitable.

After the preliminary telephone consultation, you will come to the practice for one or more appointments. In these individual sessions, you will have the opportunity to describe your personal situation in more detail and clarify your therapy concerns. I will also carry out an initial diagnostic assessment to determine whether group therapy meets your individual needs.

As soon as the fit for the group has been clarified, you will join the group for a trial session. This trial session allows you to gain a first impression of the group dynamics, the content and the working style of the group. At the same time, the group members also have the opportunity to get to know you and adjust to you.

If you decide to take part in group therapy after the trial session, I will send an application to your health insurance company, as they have to authorise the therapy (which they usually always do). The costs of group therapy are also covered by statutory health insurance.

Participation in group therapy is covered by statutory health insurance. This means that there are generally no direct costs for you as a participant. The costs for group therapy are settled directly with your health insurance company. Depending on the contract, the costs may also be covered by private health insurance companies.
